Hopes and Wishes - Vocab Assignment 10/23/08
Hopes are when someone desires to have something happen in the future, and there is a good chance it will happen. Wishes are when someone wants something to happen now that may or may not come true. Everyone has hopes and wishes. When you really hope for something, you want to work really hard to see it happen. Wishes are good because they can be fun think about. However, wishes can be bad because if you wish too much, you will never get anything done. I have many hopes and wishes.
I have many wishes. One of my wishes is a fancy tree mansion that is made up of four houses in a square, but they are still on the ground, and the only way to get to the one of the other houses, is to walk on a bridge. My second wish is that math could be easy. I envy people who are good at math. Another one of my wishes is to actually pet a unicorn, just to see what it is like. My last wish is to read one million books in one week. I know these wishes wont come true, but it is fun to think about, especially when you are having a bad day. When you are having a bad day you can dream about your wishes, and add more stuff to them.
Barack Obama
The Life and Times of Barack Obama
The person I would like to talk about today is President Elect Barack Obama. I have chosen to talk about him because he is inspiring. He inspired me and maybe other children to run for president someday. He is the first African-American to run for president, and be successful. Obama is sending the message that, yes, we can do what we believe in.
Barack Hussein Obama Jr. was born on August 4.1961 in Honolulu, Hawaii. From age six to age twelve, Barack lived in Indonesia. Obama ‘s inspiration is his father. Even though he grew up without a dad he thinks that he will learn from that and be a better father for his daughters, Malia and Sasha. When going to college, Obama got a degree, from Occidental college with international relations. In 1988, he attended Harvard Law School and earned his law degree.

What I Did Today
- 3 main senate offices
- 5 primary office buildings on Independence Ave.
- the Botanic Gardens has over 8,000 different types of flowers
- President Garfield was the only member of the House of Representatives to become president. He is also one of four presidents who were assassinated.
- Francis Perkins was the first female official, appointed by President Franklin Roosevelt in 1939. We saw the building named after her.
- The Smithsonian Institution opened in 1895. There are 16 museums total in the Smithsonian and one of them, the Air and Space Museum, has an IMAX theater and something dedicated to Einstein.
- The Museum of African Art has one story above ground and three underground.
- The Castle Building was opened in 1859.
- Japanese cherry blossom trees planted in 1940-1950 are the oldest and they border the Tidal Basin.
- Three of of Lincoln's kids died before they were teenagers and one didn't.
- The Tomb of the Unknown soldier is located in the Arlington Cemetary.
- Potomac means "trading place" in a Native American language.
- Alexander Graham Bell taught deaf children in Franklin School (we passed it).
- The National Geographic has a museum in D.C.
- Reece Witherspoon's ancestor, George Witherspoon, has a statue near Franklin School.
- The Beatles first gig in the U.S. was in Washington. We went by the Omni Hotel where they had a whole floor.
- Baby Ruth candy is named after President Garfield's daughter, Ruth, who was one year old when she died.
- The National Cathedral is the second largest cathedral in the world. Helen Keller and her teacher, Annie Sullivan where buried there. Just below the roof of the Cathedral there are gargoyles, that also serve as a drainage system when it rains. (When it rains, it looks like they are spitting water - or "gargoyling").
- There are LOTS of embassies on Embassy Row. (There are also lots of Ben and Jerry's ice cream stores in Washington D.C.)
- The highest point in Washington is the National Cathedral. That's partly because it is on a hill. Many rich people in Washington built beautiful mansions on the hill because it was cooler in the summer.
- The cream of crab soup at Tony and Joe's (at Washington Harbor) is GREAT.
- We went passed the Watergate (it looks like a ship). The Watergate burglars spied on the Democratic Headquarters from a Howard Johnson Hotel across from the Watergate, but now this hotel is part of George Washington University.
On the train back we met 3 nice people. We talked with them and had a nice conversation.
One was from Tallahassee, Florida, one of the girls was from Washington and the other from Baltimore. When we got off the train, a guy was being put in an ambulance because he passed out. Then we called our hotel and we were picked up and taken to the hotel. It was a long bur good day. Gotta Go!!!!!!!!!!! Bye

Hello!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Today when we were airborne from Houston to Baltimore I saw lots of things in the clouds. For example, I saw an elephant, a lamb, a clay pot, a dragon breathing out fire, a Santa Claus, a graveyard with skulls, a baby giant in a cradle, and a temple with stairs that looked like layers and in front were guards.
Anyway, now I am at the hotel with my Bubbe, and I watched some television and my bubbe is relaxing. Later on we might go swimming. See You Next Post,
Sabina

Field Trip!!!!!!
Today we went on a field trip to Donnelly park and stayed there for four hours!! The school provided us with lunch, hot dogs, soda, chips and cookies, but mostly, we had fun. My friends and I played Three tag Freeze tag. This is how you play:
- Gather 5-40 people
- Decide who will be "It"
- Decide who is the Guardian Angel*
- The person who is "It" has to count to 30 to give everyone else a head start
- The Guardian Angel positions itself in its spot
- Play and have fun!
*Guardian Angel- Person who is on nobody's side and has the forces of Mother Nature and the Ice Queen**
**Ice Queen- A girl that has the power of ice, i n solid form, liquid form, or gas form.

Report Card

Today I got my report card. I got all 5's! We get a score of 1-5. 5 is the highest. I also got 4 O's . An O is for outstanding citizenship. We celebrated at home with a special dinner for me. We had salmon with my favorite seasoning and peas and rice. We lit Shabbat candles and we had a tulip freshly cut from the garden on the table too. Yay me!
